Thing 12: Books, Books, and More Books:

Couldn't get Istory to show up either. Did get audiobooks to load..lots of ads, but can play free versions...just listened a bit..seems okay..not sure of professional use, but good to know of..library also subscribes to OneClick Digital, but this may offer a few more options.

I looked at Wattpad and it seems interesting..kind of like Goodreads or LibraryThing, but the idea that you can create and submit stories is intriguing...maybe good to recommend to budding writers.

FreeBook seems like a nice source of free books.
Thing 11-Library and Reference:

This made me realize that I had gotten a replacement cell phone and I no longer had the SPPL app on my phone so I reinstalled it. I had use the library's app in the past and I have found it useful for looking items up when away from a home/work computer-like I see something in a bookstore and I wonder...does the library have it? Also has been useful for keeping track of what I have checked out. I noticed too that you can send a message w/a question to a library staff member, you can search books by isbn, connect to a few databases..this doesn't seem to work on my older phone, but it's a nice feature and I can see lists of new items and currently available e-books. I also like the lists of libraries in SPPL and the twin cities..this has been useful for addresses, phone #'s, hours.

I did try the ELM app and it is useful for connecting to different databases, most of which I can get through the SPPL site, but still there are videos on how to use the various databases.

Thing 10...Sharing Photos...Instagram and Snap Chat...

Well, I've heard lots about, mostly on Entertainment news about celebrities sending photos on Instagram...seems a bit like Facebook which maybe is why Facebook bought them? The articles about how libraries are using Instagram or how one could use it are good. Snapchat I looked at the info on it and my first reaction feels similar to this youtube video I saw a link too when I was looking at the one on the 23 mobile things page:

http://youtu.be/HhuJW4NlS2c

However, some of the examples on this page:
http://librarianenumerations.wordpress.com/2013/12/09/snapchat-for-your-library/

did sound interesting, especially the pitch one...or the Snap Chat Social Stories..maybe good to promote an upcoming teen event or series...maybe

It's interesting instagram and snap chat have additional apps that allow you to save photos (snapchat) or do frames, etc (instagram)...

Thing 9:

Okay. I've tried Line Camera and it is pretty fun. The video, I know it does say things have changed since the video was made, is a little misleading because it doesn't show that there are a lot of things they would like you to buy. However, there is still a fair amount that is free and there are some fun things you can do with borders/frames, stamps (wish there were more free ones, but on the other hand an artist has to eat and all of that). I do like the collage feature-that looks like something fun for online posting and/or making fliers.

I looked at Photo Editor's website and it seemed like its selection of stamps/frames was somewhat limited, but this was before I knew that Line Camera was showing many that they would like a fee for.

I tried looking at the Ipad's camera and there don't seem to be any frames/stamps, etc so it is cool that both of these have some decorating options. The photo booth on the Ipad seems to be just taking photos with different effects.

It seems like Color Splurge and Cam Me could have their uses in that Color Splurge seems to let you color just certain parts of a photo, but maybe you can do this with the other apps too..didn't really explore, but might be useful and Cam Me seems to have a timer, but I think the video for Line Camera said that might be available too..didn't try this so not sure.

These could be useful for jazzing up flyers and online photos/postings.

Thing 8 Social Media Management:

I've used a number of these sites so I will comment on my experience especially because the Ipad which I borrowed from my son this morning when he was sleeping..was not charged so it is down to 4%..sigh.

So I've used Facebook for a while for personal reasons and a tiny bit for professional to contact someone for a program and I knew Facebook was a more reliable way to message her than e-mail which this person didn't always respond to. It's also a nice way to see what organizations are up to, upcoming events, a way to share info and ask questions. I would guess pretty much every library has a Facebook page of some sort.

I signed up for Twitter for the first time in Dec as part of a library training. I don't know, maybe I am old, but I find all these social media tools a little exhausting and to go to them all the time to keep up...? And yet I am supposed to be at the desk giving everyone eye contact so no one feels ignored. In any case, it is another way to keep up with info and reach out to people so that is good.

I signed up for Linked in a few years ago because I was searching for someone I needed to reach and it indicated they had a Linked In account..then I posted my career info on it to have just in case and as a place to track career info. Other than that I haven't used it much but it certainly would be useful for someone who is job hunting and it could be a good way to connect with other professionals/organizations.

I haven't used FourSquare..it would be interesting to know who the mayor of our library is...

As far as the HootSuite, Buffer, and Cloze go..I think that HootSuite could be good if you were trying to manage a library's or libraries' various social media postings and/or needed to post to a number of places at once for a program or some announcement that needs to be shared and Buffer looks like it is somewhat similar. Cloze could be good for making sure you don't miss important message with people with whom you are working closely. The various twitter apps and facebook apps..it is funny that you would need a separate app to help you use a social media site, I guess if I were facebook or twitter this would make me wonder whether things needed to be fixed. I don't think I'll need these, but perhaps if I were doing multiple postings it could be useful. It does make me think that you'd want to be awfully careful about what you post since once you do it, it would potentially go to many places.

I'm not sure how the tv related app applies to work but it could be fun I guess and something to recommend to patrons or a way to find out about what's happening with a show?
Thing 7: Content Saving and Sharing:

Well, I had tried Pinterest earlier in Dec as part of an inlibrary training and I can see its use-saving pictures of different book covers, displays, training, programs..it could be a good way to go back and see things you are interested in. I do recall feeling a little overwhelmed because the photos just go on and on and on and its hard to know where to stop because in a way it doesn't really stop. I can also see that it is a nice visual/graphic way for libraries to do online displays and to share what they are doing with the world.

Bitly I couldn't get it to come up as an app for ipad..maybe it is just iphone/ipod touch..in any case I think this could be useful too for saving url's/links..other than if the links change..I guess maybe pinterest would have an advantage because the item that you pin was posted to pinterest so the link shouldn't change, right?

I was thinking it kind of reminds me of del.ici.ous which was in the original 23 things..which I didn't finish..am trying to finish this one, but it's not easy...but I digress..it also makes me think of pinboard which the former gov docs librarian here put some links on and created sort of a word cloud (I think that's the term) on our website. But it looks like maybe pinboard has a one time charge..maybe it didn't before, not sure?

Thing 6 Creating and Editing Docs-I've downloaded CloudOn because it sounded appealing to have Office available on an Ipad. It looks pretty good, but I wish it had a help screen to guide more..there is a tutorial, but it is pretty basic. There seems to be a pro version now for $3.99/month so maybe help is included with this. What is tricky is how do you save..I think I've figured this out with one of the icons to the right hand side, but it was saving things in uploads and I created a new file and I am trying to figure out how to save things in the file. I managed to copy one doc and then paste it into the file, but the other doc, a trial power point presentation I haven't figured out how to save or copy it yet to my new file..I will have to play with this more, but for now I think I've had enough...the signature one seems intriguing, but not sure if I want to download another app yet if I don't have to. It sounds like this should help you view pdf's too, which is good.
